How can I protect myself while renting on the platform?

  • Take a timestamped picture of the items you rent and it's serial number to confirm the item you rented

  • Take a timestamped photo/video of your items before returning it to the owner to serve as proof that the item was in working order before you returned it

  • ALWAYS pick-up/ return your items in a public, well-lit are on your college campus.

  • (Optional) - take a picture of the person receiving their items back from you during return. Have them hold the item it their hand during photo to prove you delivered the item to them, if necessary.

How can I protect myself while lending on the platform?

How should I arrange pick-up and drop-off of my items?

After you complete your transaction, simply message the lender in our chat and agree on a meeting location. We suggest you meet in a safe, public area, such as the Student Center, campus library or academic building.

How much does Swap SZN charge?

Swap SZN only charges a 7.5% cut of the transaction price to the lender whenever they rent out an item. The renter will never be charged for using Swap SZN!​

How do I get paid?

As a lender, as soon as the person renting your items confirms the item works and they have picked it up, your rental funds will be released to your account. If you have a card or bank account linked to Swapszn.com, you can access funds immediately from your banking institution. 

What if my property is lost, stolen or damaged while it is being rented?

Swap SZN prides itself on keeping lenders safe on our platform. If anything happens to your items, you should contact us immediately. We will make our best effort to recover your items. If we can't recover/repair your items, our insurance policy has you covered. 
For late fees, the renter will be charged a late fee for each late day that will equal the amount you charged for a daily rental.

Do I have to pay a security deposit to rent things?

No, Swap SZN does not require a security deposit to rent items but, in some cases, we may require you to purchase our short-term damage insurance when renting high-ticket items. The insurance ranges from $5 - $20 per day and covers any damage that occurs during your rental. 

An item I borrowed doesn't work or stopped working while in my possession. What should I do?

If you believe the item you borrowed stopped working at no fault of your own:

  • Contact the lender ASAP and request a solution or replacement for your item.

  • If a resolution can not be made, contact the Swap SZN team ASAP!

If you've damaged an item you rented:

  • You will be responsible for repairing/replacing said item

  • Please notify the lender ASAP as they may be able to repair the item easily. 

  • Make the best effort to reach a resolution with the lender. If this is unsuccessful, contact the Swap SZN team and our Resolutions team will open a case on your behalf.

What is the Resolutions process?

Swap SZN has a team of mediators on stand-by to assist with any issues renters/lenders may have in regards to theft, damage or other misconduct. If you have any issue that you need assistance with, use the "Contact Us" link on our homepage to reach out to us.

A Lender has made a claim against me. What happens now?

Option 1 : Settling directly with the lender

It’s always best to first try to resolve the problem with the lender directly to see if you can both settle on an amount of compensation you’d both be happy with. This is often the cheapest option for you and quickest for the lender. If that’s not possible or if you reject their claim, the lender will likely then notify Swap SZN (if they haven’t already). At this point, a dedicated member of the Resolutions Team who will reach out to you within 24 hours to understand your side of the story.

Please note, you must settle direct payments between yourself and a lender within 24 hours of the end of a rental period. If you don't settle directly within 24 hours, you may be liable to pay penalty fees in the event that the Resolutions Team deems you liable for replacement, repair or late return.


Option 2 : Swap SZN Resolutions Team

Our Resolutions Team is here to mediate any issues you might have with a rental. We will always aim to be as fair as possible, to compensate our lenders for any damages to their items and to protect borrowers from potential false claims. 

In the event of a non-return or late return, you may be asked to provide a short written account of events, description of the damage and provide supporting evidence including photos/videos. The Resolutions Team will use accounts and evidence provided by both parties to determine who is liable and for how much. The conclusion they make is final. 

In the event of a damage claim, the lender may also be asked to arrange for a third-party repair company to provide a formal repair quote, including an itemized breakdown of the repair costs needed and the repair company's opinion of the likely cause of the damage; ie. user error (in which case you would be liable) or a manufacturing fault (in which case you would not be liable).

Penalty fees

If you don't initially settle directly with a lender and the Resolutions Team later deems that you're liable, you may need to pay penalty fees. These will depend on the nature of a claim (ie. non-return, late return, or repair fees).

You must ensure you settle the payment by the deadline as stated by the Resolutions Team to avoid any unnecessary further escalation and suspension from the platform.

Repayment Plans

For large sums owed, we may be able to set up a repayment plan to help you payoff the debt in monthly installments. This would need to be discussed and agreed upon with your Resolutions Case Manager before the deadline.

How much should I charge for my items?

Swap SZN does not control how much you can charge students to rent your things, but a good rule of thumb is to charge 10% or less of the items value
per rental period. You have the option to rent out your items by the day, week, month or semester so the amount you charge may change depending on how long the item is rented for.

How does the verification process work?

Swap SZN has a verification process in place to ensure the rental community remains as safe as possible. During your sign-up, you will be asked to provide your school email address (.edu) as well as Student ID #. This info will be used to verify that you are an active student at the partner campus. This process does not take long in most cases. If you have been in verification status for more than 48 hours, contact Swap SZN for assistance.

Can I alter or extend the my rental period?

Yes. You are able to extend your period by starting another transaction and renting the item for additional days. Be sure to message the items owner to make sure they are okay with your extension.

For rental cancellations, you must first get approval from the items owner to cancel your transaction so that you may receive your refund. If this is unsuccessful, contact Swap SZN, and we may reach out to owner on your behalf.

Do you offer gift cards?

Yes, we do offer gift cards for a student to use during the school year. Message us at admin@swapszn.com to purchase one.

What is the Lender Guarantee?

The Lender Guarantee is a free insurance policy for our lenders,that protects them from any damage or theft to their items by someone renting from them. Our goal is to keep our marketplace safe, and this insurance policy guarantees lenders can lend items on their campus, rent free! What is your return policy?

Returns are solely at the discretion of the item lender. Please contact the person you borrowed the item from for details
